Cuba, año 1997. Crisis general que por arte del realismo mágico, los cubanos llaman eufemísticamente «Período Especial». Se colapsan los sistemas de transporte. La bicicleta y el coche de caballos sustituyen los artefactos mecánicos. Se pierde todo menos el humor, la solidaridad y la dignidad. En este contexto Lázaro y Pedrito empiezan un viaje que les llevará a una ilusión perdida.
